Loquendo Voice Online

  • Turbo.. thanks! Now I've got it..finally..I will let you know if it works on Mac later this weekend.
    Thanks again
  • Turbocc - I finally figured out what the problem was.
For those out there, who have Macs with Leopard OS-X AND Microsoft XP/Parallels (in other word both operating systems on MacBook Pro), when you download Turboccc's link/program, it automatically goes to Miscrosoft platform through Parallels program.
Then, when you hook up Garmin and save TTS Jill file, it automatically goes and stays on Mac's Platform in 'saved' file.
When you try to do the voice modification (using Microsoft platform) and try to retrieve 'saved' TTS Jill file, it's just not there because it is saved on Mac's platform and you cannot access it from Microsoft OS.
As a conclusion, and correct me if I am wrong, you can only modify American-Jill TTS on one operation system; i.e. Microsoft platform.
  • Yep - it works like a charm! It has to be done all on one (Microsoft) platform.
Now, I will call Parallels that pre-install Microsoft on Mac's and see why those 2 platforms do not interact with each other (like they should - so they say).
    Thanks again Turboccc..
  • YES, in Australian English Karen, which is my favorite voice, I simply substituted the 'recalculating' that I find so bothersome for 2 blank spaces (just hit the space bar twice) and now I no longer hear the 'recalculating' that bothers me so much. Instead the nuvi simply and silently calculates the new route and just follows up with its updated instructions. Which for me is GREAT. Exactly what I wanted. Thanks.
BUT (nothing is perfect, right?) I followed the exact same procedure with two Spanish language voices that I also use (Paulina and Isabel), and it does not work! I was extremely disappointed when I purposely missed my turn and Isabel came back with her 'recalculo', as before. And Paulina does exactly the same thing. Very disappointing after succeeding with Karen.
    Two questions.
1 - In the Garmin/voice folder, in addition to the .VPM file for each voice there is also a .SUM file for each voice. What is that?
2 - When I connect the 760 to my computer, two new drives appear
    (a) one (letter M in my computer) displays a small GPS icon, this drive is named Garmin nuvi, and it contains a folder named 'Garmin' and a subfolder 'voice', among others.
    (b) the other drive (letter N in my computer) displays a standard disk drive icon, it is named 0101068050 and contains only one folder named 'Garmin' which in turn has only one subfolder named 'voice'.
The voice folder in both drives contains a .vpm file for Australian Karen but Spanish voices Isabel and Paulina are in the voice folder to which I referred in (a) above, not in (b). Also the voice folder in (a) is the one that has the .sum filed that I mentioned for each voice. The voice folder in (b) does not have any .sum file.
Extremely confusing for me.. Any comments will be appreciatetd. Thanks again.
  • Francisco,
1- The SUM files contain only a checkSUM, a number that is computed using the VPM file content. Do not worry about them.
2- Your M drive is the main drive for your GPS. The N drive is your SD card drive. I am surprised you have voice file on it. If you modified one voice on drive M, but not on N, maybe the file on N is used. You should remove the one on the N drive.
Long story short, it should work for Spanish voices. Continue to try and investigate.
  • I have tried everything that I can think of, including looking at and re-editing the vpm files to reconfirm that 'recalculo' (which is recalculating in Spanish) is not there any more (it is not), making sure that there are no other files with the same names (Isabel and Paulina) in my nuvi (there aren't). And I even cleared user data and reset my unit, just in case. None of that worked. When I miss a turn I still get 'recalculo' from the Spanish voices. Not a problem really, but I wish I could find out what's going on.
By the way, the list of available voices in my 760, now shows two (2) Australian Karen, two (2) Español Americas Paulina, and two (2) Español Europeo Isabel voices. And in each case both are identical, regardless of which one I choose; that is, the two Karens are identical (no recalculating), and the two Isabels are identical to each other, as are the two Paulinas (all with the recalculo). I can assure you that in my 760 there is only one vpm file with each name (Karen, Isabel and Paulina), but each name is listed twice.
My 760 is CRAZY, I guess..!!! Or maybe I should say LOCO..!!! It still works fine, though.
  • Francisco,
What have you done, man? That is pretty weird. It may be time to use your backup.. Try this first:
Edit GarminDevice.xml in the Garmin directory. You can use Wordpad. Search for Paulina and see if there is a duplicate entry. Delete one entry if you see two.
If not, go also in the Service Mode (battery icon for 7-10 seconds) and go the the checksum page. Start the checksum test and see in the sub-menu if you see 2 Paulina. Let the test complete to see if it will clear the problem.
  • What I did was to edit the three vpm files (Karen, Paulina and Isabel), in order to remove 'recalculating' (Karen) and 'recalculo' (Paulina and Isabel).
After I did that, I see that each one of those three names is shown twice in the list of available voices in my nuvi760. All three voices work fine, Karen no longer says 'recalculating' (as I intended), but Paulina and Isabel continue to say 'recalculo' (contrary to what I want). That is what I did and what has happened.
As you suggested I looked at the GarminDevice.xml file, each voice name is listed only once. I did the checksum test, and it successfully ran to a conclusion. But the double entry for each name that was edited remains.
For now I prefer not to go to the backup since all voices are working and at least Karen's 'recalculating' is no longer there.
Looks like the mystery shall remain unsolved, for the time being anyway. We'll see. Thanks again.
  • There are a couple reserved words that can be used to modify how text is pronounced. Here are some examples:
<spell> and <end_spell>: Any enclosed letters will be spelled. Example: <spell>LOST<end_spell> will be spoken as 'L-O-S-T'.
<digits> and <end_digits>: Any enclose numbers will be enumerated. Example: <digits>123<end_digits> will be spoken '1-2-3'.
<pause=s>: creates a small pause (P1) in the text.
<pause=m>: creates a medium pause (P5) in the text.
<pause=l>: creates a long pause (P9) in the text.
<address> and <end_address>: not tested yet.
<wait=0>: waits for something, but what? What is the difference with <pause>? Not tested yet.
<wait=1>: waits for something, but what? Not tested yet.
<wait=2>: waits for something, but what? Not tested yet.
<rate=s> and <end_rate>: change the speech rate. Not tested yet. I am not sure if '=s' means we need to put a number or 's' means 'slow'.
<volume=l>: change volume to low (volume = 25). Not tested yet.
<volume=m>: change volume to medium (volume = 50). Not tested yet.
<volume=h>: change volume to high (volume = 75). Not tested yet.
  • Has anyone come up with a place for sharing these voices?
  • I updated my Karen (Australian) TTS voice today without a hitch. Now, instead of saying 'Recalculating', Karen says 'Oh dear, you've gone astray'. I love it. She now sounds like some Aussies I've worked with in the past.
    Bernie
  • When I use the Voice Editor on my 350, I just get a line of numbers against odd letters, letter/number combinations.
I did it on my 660 and it worked fine.
Anyone have any ideas on this.
    Thanks
  • According to turboccc, support for the 350 was added in version 2.51. Verify that you have the latest version installed. With this version, other users have reported sucess in modifying 350 TTS voice files.

You may have to update your voice files to the latest version, also. Keep reading the follow-up posts in the above topic link.
  • Good call BeanBag. I posted the same answer to jcrayne on poifactory.
I support only one 'old' voice file for the 350 so just upgrading TTSVoiceEditor may not be enough. Upgrading the voice file should do the trick.
  • Thanks to both turbocc and Beanbag..
Once I got back to the forum and saw the replies, I had the problem solved.
I had already updated the firmware on the 350, but never thought about the voices.
Upgraded them and tried again, and, SUCCESS !!!
My wife's surprise hearing Jill say something other than 'Recalculating' was worth all the frustration finding out how to do it.
By the way, I tried to be a little original about what I put instead of 'Recalculating'.
My change for that phrase is:
'Can't you follow instructions ? Now I have to figure it out again.'
    She was floored !
    Thanks again.

I would **kill* to have a tool like that for TomTom's computer voices!
  • jcrayne, Just reading how much fun ppl are having with this proggy is worth all the hard work. Glad you are happy with it. Have fun.
    dhn,
I do not have a TomTom, but if the TomToms have TTS voice, there is a chance it can be done. I just need to put my hand on a voice file and I would know. You can post me a link to a TomTom voice file on turboccc.wikispaces.com. Maybe I can have a look at it.
  • Because TT's voice files are proprietory to TomTom, I'm understandably (I hope) reluctant to do so. Maybe Tim will say it's ok.
  • I understand perfectly.
    Just a couple questions:
1- What do you want to change in the TomTom? Is there a 'recalculating' equivalent?
2- I found files for a TomTom One. Is it a good unit to work on? Are the voice files compatible with other TomTom?
For fun, I juste pasted below some of the TomTom TTS phrases..

  • What is the name of the file you are pulling that data from, turboccc?
  • hmmm.. that structure isn't on any of my TomTom devices that I recall.
  • I remember a discussion with a poster somewhere recently about a lower end TomTom unit and a Vocalizer folder vs. the Loquendo folder we're used to for higher end units. Conjecture that maybe, maybe TT went with a different company for their 130S units. The voices offered on that unit are not available on higher end ones (x20s, x30s) and vice-versa.
Adding a VERY old link to reference a company called 'Nuance', provider of Vocalizer tts:
    http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0EIN/is_/ai_n27674693
  • edited November 2008
I got it from a package called 'TomTom with TTS Backup' (252MB rar file).
    Edit: picture removed by author.
  • Loquendo was the company TomTom has used on most of their GPS devices for TTS. Nuance is the company TomTom uses for voice recognition software.
You are right though, on my 130s there is a Vocalizer TTS folder, unlike all of my other TTS TomTom devices.
  • Still, I need to know if it is worth it to work on these files or should I find something else.. You seem to say this one is not as popular as others..
  • I don't know if that signals a switch at TomTom or if they will continue to use Loquendo on most of their models.. but that device/TTS setup would certainly be the minority of TomTom devices.
  • I happened on this forum through goole search looking for voices for my Garmin 780. The default voices are sooooooooooo boring!! Thanks for such a great program. And the volume on the 780 is so low you have to turn the radio off just to hear it. Is there any way to edit the volume for the bluetooth? It's very low although I have it turned up to 100%.
Is there any way to turn an .mp3 voice into a TTS?
I have a friend who has panic attacks when she doesn't know where she's going, so she bought my old Garmin from me (750), and I was going to send in a suggestion to Garmin about changing some prompts, now I can change hers too, like when she misses a turn instead of recalculating I can put in a soothing assurance that it's ok.
    WOW!!! Great work!!! :P
  • I own a Nuvi 200 so the TTS editor won't work for me. In your readme.txt file it reads: 'If you wish to modify non-TTS VPM files, use VoiceEditor or VoiceUtility.'
Where can I get either of these two programs?
    Thanks!

    Hi ZedRight,
You could change all text to 'Ding'. :) That would do the trick.. It is going to be a dull 'Ding' voice.. LOL! Sorry, I have no other idea for now.

  • I would like to replace all text with a simple 'DING' sound alert. Is that possible?

    Hi ZedRight,
You could change all text to 'Ding'. :) That would do the trick.. It is going to be a dull 'Ding' voice.. LOL! Sorry, I have no other idea for now.
That would be great if it could be a .wav or mp3 file.
    Or maybe Homer Simpson 'Duh'
  • I love this, I have my nuvi350 changed so instead of saying 'recalculating', Karen says 'You stupid bitch! You got us lost again!'
Now I miss turns intentionally just to hear it sometimes.
  • LOL! I thought I was the only one doing that.. :)
  • Has anyone or any place set up a spot to share/archive all the 'interesting' changes that can be done for TTS voices? There are some imaginative ones out there. Might have to set up a ESRB rating system though...
  • Need help..
Just installed the latest v2.63 TTS VoiceEditor, opened the English British Serene vpm file, but error message returned 'Run time error-9' 'Subscript out of range'.
Tried opening other files, no problems there, except for Serena. Wondering why.
    Any issues? Thanks!
  • Hunlen,
I do not seem to have Serena (or Serene). What is your GPS model? I would be happy to help if I had the file..
    Turbo.
  • I purchased the Nuvi 255W from Amazon last week. The voice 'Serena' is included along with other TTS files as well.
If you'd like a copy of the file, how could I send it to you?
  • hunlen,
    Read my support page here:

    Cheers!
  • I downloaded TTS Voice Editor and am trying to remove the 'recalculating' voice. I want the GPS to not say anything at all when I make a wrong turn.
So, I am getting a weird error in my tempts to remove the Recalculating voice. If I change the recalculating field and leave the field blank, my GPS says 'point'
I also tried to change the field to include just a comma and my GPS still says 'point'
All the English voices have come up with the same error.
I have a nuvi 260W. Any suggestions or solutions?
    Thanks
  • Forumguy,
Have you tried just to put a space character (hit space bar once)?
  • I just tried filling the field with a space and a period
Neither worked. My Garmin still says 'point'
    : /
  • Did you try a space only? No period.
Your 'point' problem is strange. I recall one person blanked all the fields with no problem. Not even a space.
There are already some strings with totally blanked lines and there is no problem. It is already supported by Garmin. It is there is any languages. Please scan the list of strings and see for yourself.
    Which voice are you modifying?
  • Yeah it is a strange problem and yes I tried just a space. I tried just a period too (that is what I meant. I didn't put the two together)
Now I know line 100 something has a field that says 'point'. But I figure that is for distance reasons. Such as 'Drive 'point' 5 miles and turn right onto..'
Maybe I am wrong? If all else fails, I can always go back to recalculating (UGH)
Oh, and yes, all the other english languages suffer from this same problem.
  • I tried with Jack and looked at the new file. All seems good. I did not go on the road, so something could still be wrong, but again, it looks very good.
Maybe start with a fresh un touched VPM file if not done already.
